Marysville School District to Develop a Policy Feedback Process
Marysville School District is in the process of developing a process and structure to receive feedback from the community on policies that will help the Board of Directors to understand the personal, emotional, and legal implications of specific policies before moving them along in the policy adoption process.
Msvl. WA - Public input creates more inclusive and cohesive communities. Public input also contributes to better decisions because decision-makers can get more information on public sentiment and a diversity of ideas they can use to make decisions in the best interest of all children.
To this end, the Marysville School District is working to provide more opportunities for the public to provide feedback to the Board of Directors on policies before they take action. Embedded in this potential feedback process will be ways for members of the Marysville/Tulalip community, school district staff, and students to be informed of the legal implications of potential actions, let alone any operational complexities that may arise from potential actions.
This process will not be invoked for every policy. This public feedback process will be used when the Board or the District believes it is essential to get public feedback and participation. “With a process and structure such as this in place, it may allow us as a greater community to understand the personal, emotional, and legal implications of certain policies, for example, parental consent, before moving along in any policy adoption process,” said Dr. Robbins, Superintendent. “I cite the parental consent matter only as an example of the importance and benefit of additional structures to get timely, diverse, inclusive, and useful feedback from the greater community beyond public comment at board meetings” he added. At this time, the school board has tabled the parental consent policy indefinitely until the feedback process is developed, piloted, and complete. The feedback process will be ready to pilot in the fall for policies that may need additional feedback from engaged parents, students, staff, and the community on policies that are funneled into this developing process before they are presented to the board for review and potential action.
