We join our entire community in sending thoughts, hearts, and hopes to the staff, students and families at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and the Parkland Florida community as they come to terms with their recent school shooting - a horrible tragedy that sadly impacts so many, so deeply.
Having been a school district where a shooting has occurred, we know the sadness this brings to everyone and the memories it can stir for all of us in Marysville and Tulalip.
High profile acts of violence, particularly in schools, can confuse and frighten children who may feel in danger or worry that their friends or loved-ones are at risk. They will look to their parents and other adults for information and guidance on how to react. Parents and school personnel can help children feel safe by establishing a sense of normalcy and security and talking with them about their fears. Please take the time to review this Talking to Children About Violencedocument, which provides helpful tips for parents and staff for interacting with students and helping them process this news.
Here is a also a link to the Student Health Resources page which overviews District programs and provides links to other resources for our students, families and community.
Thank you for working together to support our children.
Take care,
Jason Thompson, Acting Superintendent, Marysville School District
