Marysville Students Excel in YMCA Mock Trial District Tournament

Students participating in a mock trial at 10th Street Middle School, Legacy High School, in partnership with Marysville YMCA, saw great success in the February competition.

Msvl. WA - The Marysville School District is pleased to celebrate the incredible achievements of several middle and high school students at a recent mock trial District Tournament on February 22 and 23. 10th Street Middle School 7th graders earned first place in the competition, and one of the 8th-grade teams earned third place. Congratulations to 10th Street students Mia and Hannah, who tied for best witness, and Lucas H., who earned best lawyer.

In addition to the mock trials at 10th Street, a high school student team, with the support of the YMCA, is headed to the State Championship on March 22. The Marysville Gold Mock Trial team, led by Marysville Getchell senior captains Andrew Norton, Sabrina Neal, and Keali`i Mooring, took home second place at the District Tournament and the prestige of being the first team from Marysville to qualify for the State Championship with an automatic invitation. Additionally, for the first time in Marysville, a team of students from Legacy High School competed in the District Tournament. Student Andrew Norton said, “[The Legacy team] competed admirably…we all expect great things from their program under the leadership of Coach Anne Galenberg and team captain Zara Ibach.”

Coach Eric Hanson established the mock trial team in Marysville in 2007 at Marysville Pilchuck High School. Today, the competition version of Mock Trial is offered at 10th Street Middle School, Legacy High School, and through the YMCA for district students within the Marysville YMCA’s service area.

Mock trials teach the American legal system by providing hands-on experience. Students analyze a case each year by evaluating the facts, building a case theory, and identifying possible issues. Student Andrew Norton said of the mock trial program, “It is a deeply immersive experience, with an unmatched ability to develop critical thinking skills while learning about our legal system.”

Congratulations to all students on their successes at the mock trial competition, and best of luck to the students heading to the State Championship.
