School Closure Committee Recommendations

Committee

The School Closure Committee met on November 14, 2024. The meeting brought together representatives (parents, staff, and community members) from schools and programs to discuss the potential school closures collaboratively. The district presented three proposed options (A, B, C), and the committee added two additional Options (D, E), as detailed in the PowerPoint presentation linked HERE. Options A, B, and C were developed based on the feedback from the community meetings. Options D and E were brought forward at the committee meeting by representatives from Legacy High School, providing some alternatives for consideration.

During the committee discussions, they evaluated each option's feasibility, impact, and alignment with the district's financial targets and guiding questions to meet the needs of students and families. The committee recommendations will be presented to the school board in an informational meeting on December 2 in a presentation on school closure community forums and the closure committee process.

The Board of Directors will make the final decision after studying each recommendation.

FAQ

  • Why doesn't the district sell land/property to increase revenue?

While the district could increase revenue by selling land or property, that revenue goes to the capital projects budget and cannot be used for the district's and schools' day-to-day operations.

  • Who is on the school closure committee?
    See the list posted above.

  • If we close schools now, what do we do when more students move in and people start bringing their children back to our schools?
The district will monitor enrollment closely and make adjustments where and when needed. Currently, our enrollment does not drive the number of schools in the district.

  • Can you please share the number of students in a school boundary area?
Yes, this will be part of the boundary adjustment process in a later phase.

  • Will you consider the needs of all students when making school closure decisions?
Yes, all needs will be considered: those with IEPs, Highly Capable, socio-economic status, and more.

  • How can I get involved?

Interested parties can sign up to participate to serve on the committee or other district committees. For those wanting to volunteer in their child's school, please complete the volunteer application linked HERE.
